Legal Literacy as the Key to Justice: Kateryna's Story

“I was sure that nothing would work out. But thanks to the specialists at the NGO Girls, I am now calm because part of the house officially belongs to me, and I will be able to leave it to my children,” Kateryna shares.

Kateryna tried to register her ownership rights to the house she had inherited from her late father for two years. However, every time she went to the Administrative Services Center (ASC), the administrator refused to accept her documents. The reason for the refusal was either an incomplete set of documents or insufficient grounds for approval. Having no legal awareness, the woman was only advised to bring new certificates, but no written refusal was ever provided.

After another unsuccessful attempt, Kateryna turned to the NGO Girls, where she received free legal advice. The lawyer explained to her which documents confirm the right to inheritance, explained the procedure for submitting an application, and emphasized that the administrator had no right to refuse to accept documents. If there are any comments, they are obliged to issue a written refusal.

Having received the necessary explanations, Kateryna returned to the Administrative Services Center. She insisted on compliance with the procedure and demanded an official response. This time, the administrator could not refuse and accepted the documents. Within a few days, the woman received an extract from the State Register of Real Rights to Immovable Property, which confirmed her ownership of the house.

This story proves how important it is to know your rights, be able to defend them, and promptly seek legal assistance if necessary. Consulting with a specialist can change a situation that seems hopeless and give a person confidence in protecting their own interests.

Legal assistance is provided within the framework of the project “Community based GBV responses in the Sumy Region”
