Maryna had been experiencing domestic violence from her husband for a long time. Even after the divorce, the pressure did not stop. Her former partner continued to threaten and intimidate her with the possibility of taking away their two minor children, using his official position, as he worked in the police.
The woman lived in constant fear, feeling emotionally exhausted and helpless. She did not understand how to protect herself and her children or where to seek help. Contacting the NGO Girls was her first and extremely important step towards safety and regaining control over her own life.
While working with a psychologist, Maryna gradually stabilized her emotional state, restored her sense of self-worth, and found the inner resources to take further decisive actions. She also received humanitarian aid in the form of food packages and a dignity kit, which provided important support during the crisis.
Thanks to the legal support of the organization's specialists, Maryna was able to protect her rights and obtain a restraining order from the court prohibiting the abuser from approaching her. That decision was a key step in protecting her rights and the safety of her children.
Gradually regaining her psychological stability, Maryna began to work on her self-realization. She took massage courses and, having a medical education, opened her own massage parlor. That gave her financial independence, self-confidence, and the ability to provide for her children on her own.
Today, Maryna lives without fear, building a stable future for herself and her children, and is an example of how timely comprehensive support helps women who have experienced domestic violence to regain control over their lives and realize their potential.
The assistance is provided within the project “Strengthening Access and Service Provision for SRH Support and GBV Prevention among Conflict-Affected Women and Girls in Eastern and Southern Ukraine” in cooperation with the international humanitarian organization CARE, with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office.
